What do you need?

What will you have to do?

  • Wash the avocado pit thoroughly. Place three toothpicks on the avocado pit around the sides to prevent the seed from sinking.

  • Place the pit in a jar with water. Only the widest part of the pit should be submerged in water. It is recommended to use a transparent glass so you can know when the roots begin to grow.

  • Put the jar in a warm and bright place but remember that it should not be directly exposed to sunlight. Change the water every five days to prevent mold and fungus from growing.

  • New shoots begin to emerge from the seed between two and six weeks after putting it in the water. (If you don't see any progress after eight weeks, start again with another avocado pit).

  • Check the water level regularly to make sure the water always covers the base of the pit, submerged to about 2 cm or a little more than ¬æ s of an inch.

  • Cut the avocado plant shoots in half when the stems reach about 15 cm. or about 6 inches long.

  • When the roots are stronger, and the shoot has grown, new leaves will grow. At this point, transplant it into a pot, leaving the top part of the pit exposed, and out of the ground.
